Odessa Permian vs. Midland Lee Rivalry Game lives up to reputation

May 20, 2009
By iHigh Admin of Great American Rivalry Series

This is The “Friday Night Lights” game, and it lived up to its reputation. In front of a crowd topping 14,000 fans on a warm, west Texas Friday night amid the sagebrush, the Panthers and the Rebels met on the gridiron to settle this annual rivalry for another year.

The Rebels struck first with a first quarter touchdown, but the Permian Panthers quickly responded, tying the score at 7-7 before the end of the first quarter. In a ground game struggle for most of the first half; Permian edged its way to a lead of 14-10 by the break. The discussion at halftime in the Panthers locker room must have done the trick. When they returned to the field, MoJo magic was in full force.

The Panthers scored early and often in the second half on runs by Sherard Ray and some stellar play from Ryan Rumbaugh. The Rebels fought back to put a late score on the board, but they would fall to the Men in Black from Permian, 35-17.
